Eyeing the No 1

To settle old scores from 2015 – Audi will contest the 2016 season with the same eight drivers who raced for them last year and dominated the race action more often than not – but failed to win any title, in the end. A situation they definitely don’t want to encounter a second time. The list of the Audi successes is long although the manufacturer started his motor-sport involvement rather late. Yes, in the 1930s, the Auto Union AG vehicles gave their Mercedes-Benz rivals an extremely hard time. After the merger of Auto Union and NSU AG, resulting in today’s Audi AG, back in 1969, the company need some time and only in the early 1980s it began to seriously get involved in motor racing. The Ingolstadter’s automobile super star of these days – the ‘Ur-Quattro’ caused stir after stir in the rallying world and helped its drivers to win the World Championship in 1982 and 1984. After having secured further rally successes, Audi also made the Quattro drive acceptable in road racing – inter alia in DTM. In 1990, Hans-Joachim Stuck celebrated a perfect debut. In the Audi V8 quattro he won the DTM drivers’ title right away. After less than three years, the manufacturer retired from the season for good – to return in 2004 with a bang: Mattias Ekström won the title with his Audi A4 DTM. Two years after Lauent Aiello’s title triumph with an independent Abt Audi TT. From 2007 to 2009, Ekström and two times Timo Scheider gave Audi a historic title hat-trick. Martin Tomczyk secured another drivers’ title in 2011 and in 2013, Mike Rockenfeller won Audi’s last DTM drivers’ title to date, with the new RS5 DTM. In addition to shining in DTM, Audi also has been setting standards in endurance racing, since 1999 – both as works team and in the customers’ sport. Since 2000, Audi has been a particularly successful force in Le Mans. Altogether, the Ingolstadt based manufacturer won 13 of the 15 races they competed in. Further major successes at numerous circuits all over the world have turned Audi into one of most successful brands in motor racing.
